Surf, Trek & Camp

Surf, trek and camp, mixed into one route built for you

From the misty peaks of the Central Highlands to the depths of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary range of adventure travel into a surprisingly compact island – often just a few hours' drive apart. Rather than offering one fixed activity, we combine the ones that suit you into a single, connected adventure route across the island.

Surfing at a south coast break in Sri Lanka

Along the coast, surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, marine fishing, kayaking and canoeing open up vibrant coral reefs, colourful marine life and fascinating shipwrecks. Sri Lanka's south and east coasts – around Weligama, Hikkaduwa and the famous point break at Arugam Bay – are especially popular for surfing, with breaks suited to complete beginners and experienced surfers alike, and a swell somewhere on the island almost year-round.

Inland, the hill country's mountains, tea plantations, waterfalls and rural landscapes around Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains are made for hiking and trekking. The Pekoe Trail, one of the island's most spectacular long-distance hiking routes, winds through tea plantations, misty mountains, forests, remote villages and historic paths across the Central Highlands, while the Knuckles Mountain Range and the pilgrim's route up Adam's Peak reward those after a tougher climb.

Plan your own adventure route

Want a mix of surf, hiking, or camping that actually matches your fitness level and time on the island? Send us your interests and travel dates and we'll design a personal adventure route – not a one-size-fits-all package.

Hiking the Pekoe Trail through Sri Lanka's hill country tea plantations

For travellers who want to sleep closer to nature, camping and glamping in Sri Lanka range from simple forest and riverside campsites to stylish glamping retreats with private decks and comfortable beds – and can be combined with wildlife safaris, hiking, stargazing or village visits for a fuller outdoor experience.

Sri Lanka's national parks, from Yala to Wilpattu, add wildlife safaris to the mix, while rock climbing, mountain trekking and waterfall abseiling suit travellers looking for a bigger physical challenge among the dramatic rock formations and mountain scenery of the Knuckles Range and the hill country.

None of this has to come as a fixed adventure package. We put the activities that interest you – diving one day, a hike the next, a night of glamping after that – into one itinerary designed specifically for your trip across Sri Lanka.
